Type 347 stainless steel is a stabilized austenitic SS alloy with niobium to prevent carbide precipitation, making it ideal for high-temperature applications. For most industrial piping, 347 SS pipe is preferred for its thermal stability and corrosion resistance in pressure systems.

In piping terminology, PE stands for “Plain End.” A plain end (PE) SS pipe has square-cut ends that are neither threaded nor beveled. This type is typically used for welding or slip-on flange connections, commonly seen in stainless steel fabrication and industrial plumbing systems.

SS 150 pipe typically refers to stainless steel pipe rated for Class 150 pressure, based on ANSI standards. This rating indicates it can handle up to 150 psi at a specific temperature. It’s widely used in low to medium-pressure systems like water distribution, HVAC, and industrial pipelines.

SS Class 150 pipe is a stainless steel piping system compatible with Class 150 flanges and fittings, which can handle up to 150 psi. Welding SS pipes requires compatible filler materials such as ER308, ER309, or ER316 welding rods or wires, depending on the grade of the stainless steel. TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding are most common, and the choice of filler must match or exceed the corrosion resistance of the base metal. Shielding gases like argon or helium are also used to protect the weld area from oxidation.

Leakage in SS pipe weld joints used for hot water supply is usually caused by:

Poor welding technique (e.g., lack of penetration or improper filler)

Thermal expansion and contraction, which can stress the joints over time

Corrosion or scaling inside the pipe

Improper post-weld treatment such as not passivating the weld zone

Using the correct welding procedure and ensuring proper joint design can help eliminate leaks in hot water SS piping systems.

SS304 and SS316 are two of the most commonly used grades of stainless steel in industrial and commercial piping.
